If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.

Aikido is definitely not the only martial art with a philosophical background, but I think it's one of the most obvious in that sense. The philosophical, not to say moral ideas are baked into the very technique: "the art of peace - hurt as little as possible". It's pretty difficult to get around that and think of it as only an art of self defense. And that is somewhat pretentious: Sensei will not only teach me how to fight, but also how to live my life and how to treat my fellow human beings? Is that person in the big black pants worthy of such a task? I can see they know how to throw people on the mat, but whoever said they are good enough human beings to teach me peace? In fact, whoever said THEIR master taught them well, or even O-Sensei himself? I can see in the video that he was a small Japanese guy with a white beard, which instantly makes him a legendary martial artist, but what if all of this "art of peace" thing was just a show? He won't be the first nor the last "holy" person to prove not so holy after all.

How do we know that we are learning the "right" thing, with the "right" master?

Don't look at me. Why should I know?
